Where are the timing marks on 1997 Mercury Villager?
Q. The Villager also misfires when the check engine light is flashing. What could be the cause of this?

A. Hopefully this will help, as for the marks, look down at the crankshaft balencer and you will see a pointer, there is also a series of notches on the crank pulley, they are not marked at all, the yellow notch is TDC, itr should be the first notch, your timing spec is 15BTDC so you need to line the pointer to the 4th notch. Ignition Timing Warm the engine (6007) to the normal operating temperature. Rev the engine to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to idle. Turn off all electrical loads. NOTE: Ensure that the throttle position sensor (TPS) is disconnected if not using the Rotunda New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester 007-00500. Check the idle speed. Idle speed should be 750 ( 50) rpm with NGS Tester and… [cont.]

replacing a back side window on a mercury villager?
Q. Someone through a bottle into my side window of my mercury villager and its in little pieces now. Is this a job that I can tackle myself to try to cut down the cost of this repair. If so, how do I do this correctly?
Asked by roband2000 - Thu Apr 24 11:29:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No. Windows need to be professionally replaced. You have to have the correct size of glass, and have the tools to install the window AND the seal. It should cost around 200 dollars to have it replaced.

Why is it that the earlier gernerations of the Mercury Villager and the Nissan Quest look exactly the same?
Q. Usually Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln vehicles look similar because their all part of the Ford Motor Company. But I thought Nissan isn't part of the Ford Motor Company. Yet the Nissan Quest and the Mercury Villager look exactly alike. Why is that?
Asked by amg - Sun Dec 13 17:50:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 2 Comments
A. Because it is the same. Ford made a deal with Nissan to make small changes to the Quest and sell it as a Mercury. See this story on Wiki: You are correct in that Nissan is not (nor have they ever) been part of Ford or vice versa. It was just a business deal, like the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix or the Volkswagen Routan/Chrysler Town and Country (although the VW has some different sheetmetal).

A. They are just below the exhaust manifold, there is some that are down behind the catalytic converters, but you want the ones by the manifold, Im not saying that they are not bad, but other issues like a ECT, MAF sensors can cause problems and make you think the O2s are bad

How do I replace the front wheel bolts in my 97 Mercury Villager Van?
Q. 2 of them have broken off so I want to replace them. It appears I need to take the whole plate they are in off is that so? If so what size socket will I need for the axel nut that holds it on?

A. your rotors should just come off, without taking the nut off. i think that nut is for the axle. take the caliper and rotor off and hammer the broken studs out and put the new studs in, take a nut and run it on the stud until its all the way in.

A. agree with Mike on that price. As a word of caution, if you have someone do the work plan on doing the timing belt as well, but don't let them double charge you on the labor. This is a common practice even at the car dealerships. What Mike mentioned is key. On some mercury villagers with the 3.0L engines the WP is ran by the timing belt. So you have to removed the timing belt to take out the WP. Alot of shops will try and charge a seperate labor charge for each. Also another thing on the nissan/merc engines. I've seen the upper hose clamp come loose on the water outlet pipe. The antifreeze will drip right down the front of the engine block hidden from view and look like the WP is leaking. When in fact it can be a bad hose clamp.… [cont.]

Where is the Camshaft Position Sensor located on a 1997 Mercury Villager?

A. Unfortunately the Mercury Villager uses a Nissan engine. Actually that isn't unfortunate because Nissan knows how to build a good engine, but it also uses Nissan's electronic engine controls. Nissan houses the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) inside the distributor. It is actually not a serviceable component and requires replacement of the entire distributor. This can be very costly. I would make certain the CMP is actually the failed component. Let's look at a couple things first. Clear the code and take the vehicle for a ride again. Does the code reoccur? If it does, then I would see if I had 12 volts at the black and white wire going into the distributor while cranking the engine. If not, then you need to find out why. Unfortunately… [cont.]

A. To my knowledge, a town is bigger than a village. So, a townsperson would be almost no different than a villager, except that they might reside in a larger area. And a village hints at being rural farmland/people or old (like as in pre-1900).

01 Mercury Villager won't start. Wondering if this is a security system problem?
Q. I bought a brand new battery, but even before that I had power inside the van (lights, radio, fan, etc..), but it won't start. I know that there is a security system, but since we owned the van we have never had the remote or used the security system. Any ideas on how to either disable the security system or what the problem might be? Thanks!

A. There should be a pats system on that car from the factory. Generally if there is a problem with it when you turn the key to start it. The security light on the dash will keep flashing. If the light goes on when you insert the key but then shuts off and stays off then it's operating correctly.

How can I fix a non sliding automatic seatbelt in a '97 Mercury Villager Mini-Van?
Q. When you open the driver's side door, the angled seatbelt moves forward to allow a person to sit properly in the driver's seat. But, my problem is that when you open the door now, the automatic seatbelt makes a noise as though it is struggling to move. Moving it manually doesn't work and I haven't tried any kind of lubricant yet. Anybody have any tips or "how-to"s?
Asked by johnsmith_20 - Mon Oct 29 13:50:07 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It has either come off the track, or the motor needs to be replaced. Take off your trim to reveal the track the seatbelt slides on. See if it is broken. If not, you can follow the belt thing coming off of the seatbelt to the motor. Mine is located behind the drivers seat on the plastic interior peice to the left. Make the seatbelt make the noise and listen if it is coming from the motor, and watch what the motor does. You should be able to figure it out from there.
