mehr als ein paar dornenpitzen ist von unserem kleinen gruenen kaktus momentan nicht zu sehen im sommer sieht er uebrigens so aus auch vom feigenkaktus opuntia humifusa ist nur wenig zu sehen der ist aber mehr als kaelteerprobt und wird das auch diesmal unbeschadet ueberstehen das er waehrend des winters

Sulcatas and opuntia cactuses?
Q. I have a sulcata, Im not sure how old but he is only about 7 or 8 inches so I dont thnk he is that old, I am redesigning his cage and I am planting some plants for him, Im using a variety of grasses and greens that many people have recommended but im not sure about the cactus. I bought one that has some red flower type things on it and it says it is opuntia but would it be ok to put in his tank and let him eat off of it or should I cut pieces and give to him, and if so what pieces. O it has some 'spikes' but they are not that rigid or sharp. any help would be appreciated, thanks

A. an optunia will be eaten pretty quickly by your sulcata they are a natural treat that is packed full of calcium, usually when you feed it to tortoises you despine it first it is really easy to do and can be done with a lighter, in the wild they would eat it how it is spines and all but obviously we like to keep our tortoises safe and stop and scratches to their eyes, so if you can de spine it first and they will love the pads and the flowers, if you cut pieces off the plant will last longer if you put it in the enclosure and the tortoises can get to it it will be gone in a few days best of luck honey
