"earth describe-write") is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C.). Four historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography as a study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of man-land relationship, and research in earth sciences. Nonetheless, modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the Earth and all of its human and natural complexities—not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences," geography is divided into two main branches—human geography and physical geography. From Wikipedia under the

Many professors come up with theories that they have no evidence to support. They need to publish research every so often. They came up with an idea that no one has really looked at before to try and make a startling discovery. Some try to get their students to do their legwork. If it was a real phenomenon then supporting data would not be difficult to find. For example, the destruction of the rainforest in the Amazon can change an area from rainforest to cleared cropland or grazing areas. What was once a vibrant and diverse collection of trees, plants, vegetation, insects and animals can become a flat pasture for grazing cattle or a tilled field for growing cash crops. In essence, it is transforming the nature of the area or region from one type of land area into another type of land area, and generally it is of a man-made creation, such as the rainforest example. A geographical process may, of course, be a natural process that transforms one landform into another.
